Description / ISABELLA 1893 25C Silver Commemorative PCGS MS66

A landmark of the classic commemorative series, this 1893 Isabella Quarter is a beautifully preserved PCGS MS66 example of one of the most historically important silver commemoratives ever issued by the United States Mint.

Struck at Philadelphia for the World’s Columbian Exposition, the Isabella Quarter holds a singular place in American numismatics as the first United States commemorative quarter dollar and only the second commemorative coin issued by the U.S. Mint. The obverse presents a left-facing portrait of Queen Isabella I of Spain, crowned and elegantly draped, with the surrounding legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1893. The reverse depicts a kneeling female figure holding a distaff and spindle, framed by the inscription BOARD OF LADY MANAGERS and COLUMBIAN QUAR. The reverse motif is generally understood as an allegory of women’s industry and achievement, created for the Board of Lady Managers of the Exposition.

In Gem Mint State 66, this example displays sharply defined central detail, attractive satiny luster, and notably clean surfaces for the issue. Both sides exhibit soft silver-gray coloration with delicate champagne-gold highlights and a pleasing, original appearance. The strike is strong overall, with the portrait of Isabella and the reverse figure showing excellent clarity, while the fields remain smooth and visually appealing. The coin offers the refined eye appeal advanced collectors expect in a premium certified representative of this challenging type.

The historical importance of the Isabella Quarter cannot be overstated. Issued to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage to the New World, it honors the queen whose patronage helped make that expedition possible. It is also the first U.S. coin to portray an actual historical woman rather than the allegorical Liberty, and the first to depict a foreign monarch. These distinctions have long made the type especially desirable among collectors of classic commemoratives, type coins, women on coins, and historically significant U.S. issues.

With a mintage of 24,214 pieces, the Isabella Quarter is not a low-mintage rarity in the absolute sense, but it is a coveted and always in-demand one-year type with enduring collector appeal. Certified by PCGS in MS66, this specimen comes from a population of 291 pieces, with only 144 graded finer, underscoring its solid status in the upper tier of surviving examples. Choice and Gem Mint State coins are eagerly sought, particularly those with original surfaces and attractive color such as the present piece.

An iconic key type of the classic commemorative era, this 1893 Isabella Quarter combines historical resonance, elite certified quality, and outstanding visual appeal in a format that remains indispensable to serious U.S. coin collections.
