Description / ALBANY 1936 50C Silver Commemorative PCGS MS65

A sharply preserved Gem example of the popular Albany Charter commemorative, certified PCGS MS65.

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1936, this classic silver half dollar was issued to mark the 250th anniversary of the granting of the Albany Charter of 1686. The obverse depicts a handshake between two historical figures associated with the chartering of Albany, framed by the inscriptions UNITED. IN. CHARTERED. 1686 and ALBANY, N.Y., with the date 1936 below. The reverse features a beaver standing on a branch, a fitting emblem long associated with New York’s colonial fur trade, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

This MS65 representative offers the strong technical quality collectors expect from a Gem commemorative. The strike appears bold overall, with clear definition in the central devices and lettering. Lustrous silver surfaces are enlivened by warm golden patina, giving the piece especially pleasing visual character. Preservation is solid for the assigned grade, with only minor marks consistent with careful handling and the issue’s often encountered storage history. The overall eye appeal is distinctly above average, enhanced by the attractive color and balanced surfaces.

The Albany half dollar occupies a notable place in the classic commemorative series of 1892-1954, a field that remains one of the most actively collected areas of United States numismatics. Issued during the height of the commemorative boom of the 1930s, the type is admired for its historical subject matter, distinctive colonial-era motifs, and compact one-year design format. The 1936 Albany issue commemorates the formal municipal charter granted by Governor Thomas Dongan, an event of lasting importance in the civic development of colonial New York.

Collector demand for the Albany commemorative has remained steady thanks to its historical appeal, distinctive design, and status as a one-year issue. Gem-certified examples such as this are especially desirable for type collectors seeking premium quality and for commemorative specialists building high-grade sets. Its combination of historical significance, attractive toning, and certified Mint State preservation ensures enduring market interest.

An appealing Gem Albany half dollar with rich golden color and strong collector pedigree, well suited for the advanced commemorative cabinet or an elevated U.S. type set.
