Description / 1879 G$1 Gold Dollar PCGS MS66
Condition Census quality for the type, this 1879 Gold Dollar is a sharply preserved Philadelphia issue certified PCGS MS66.
The obverse features Liberty wearing a feathered headdress in the Indian Princess style, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date 1879 below. On the reverse, the denomination 1 DOLLAR and the date are placed within an agricultural wreath composed of cotton, corn, wheat, and tobacco, a compact yet distinctive design emblematic of the Type III Gold Dollar series. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this issue represents the final design subtype of the denomination, introduced in 1856 with a larger portrait intended to improve striking quality and visibility.
The present coin displays the strong technical merits expected of the assigned MS66 grade. The strike is crisp throughout, with clear definition on Liberty’s portrait, headdress details, and the reverse wreath. Surfaces appear notably clean and carefully preserved, with only the most minor marks consistent with the grade. Rich golden color is enhanced by warm honey and orange-gold undertones, while attractive mint luster remains bright across both sides. The overall eye appeal is highly impressive, combining sharp definition with pleasing originality.
Gold Dollars have long held a special place in United States numismatics. As the smallest denomination regular-issue gold coin struck by the Mint, they are prized for their historic charm, compact format, and distinctive design evolution. The 1879 issue comes from the later years of the series, a period that appeals strongly to collectors seeking high-grade examples of the post-Civil War Philadelphia emissions. Type III pieces in premium Mint State grades are especially popular, as they offer the most refined and collectible form of the denomination.
While not a major rarity by date, the 1879 is decidedly desirable in Gem and finer condition, where quality, luster, and eye appeal become increasingly important to advanced collectors. Superb preservation in the upper Mint State range gives this piece added numismatic appeal, particularly for buyers assembling a type set of classic U.S. gold or a specialized Gold Dollar collection.
A lovely Gem Type III Gold Dollar, this 1879 PCGS MS66 offers outstanding preservation, handsome original color, and enduring appeal for the collector of classic United States gold.
