Description / 1876 5C Shield Nickel PCGS MS64
A near-Gem Centennial-era Shield Nickel with notably original appeal.
The 1876 Shield Nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, represents one of the later issues in the short-lived Shield nickel series, the first five-cent type composed of copper-nickel for regular circulation. James B. Longacre’s distinctive design features a bold Union shield on the obverse, flanked by olive branches and surmounted by a cross, with the date 1876 below. The reverse displays the large numeral 5 at center, encircled by stars and separated by rays absent on this later subtype, with the statutory legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and CENTS completing the perimeter. The type remains instantly recognizable as one of the most historically important minor coin designs of 19th-century American numismatics.
Certified PCGS MS64, this example sits just beneath the Gem threshold and offers the level of quality sought by advanced type collectors and date specialists alike. The strike is pleasing for the issue, with strong central definition and crisp presentation of the shield lines and reverse numeral. Surfaces are well preserved for the assigned grade, showing only the moderate marks expected of a Choice Mint State survivor. Original mint luster remains evident across both sides, and the coin presents with an attractive overall look that should stand out favorably in hand.
Within the series, the 1876 issue enjoys sustained collector interest as part of a challenging and popular 19th-century nickel set. Shield nickels are widely appreciated for their status as the nation’s first base-metal five-cent coin, introduced during a transformative era in post-Civil War commerce. Their production was often plagued by technical difficulties, contributing to uneven striking characteristics throughout the series and enhancing the importance of well-preserved Mint State examples such as the present coin.
Although not the rarest date in the series, the 1876 remains a desirable Philadelphia issue, especially in Choice Mint State grades where quality and originality become increasingly important. Collectors pursuing high-grade type coins, complete date runs, or representative examples of early U.S. minor coinage will find considerable appeal here. PCGS-certified examples at this level offer an attractive balance of affordability, eye appeal, and advanced-collector quality.
A sharply collectible 19th-century U.S. nickel, this 1876 PCGS MS64 Shield Nickel combines strong technical merit, historic type significance, and pleasing visual character in a highly desirable certified format.
