Description / 1869 Gold Dollar - Type 3 G$1 NGC MS63
A pleasing Mint State Type 3 Gold Dollar with strong visual presence and classic Civil War–era appeal.
This 1869 Gold Dollar, struck at Philadelphia, represents the final design type of the denomination, the Indian Princess Head / Large Head style introduced in 1856. The obverse features Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered headdress inscribed LIBERTY, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The reverse displays the denomination and date in four lines, 1 / DOLLAR / 1869, enclosed within an agricultural wreath of cotton, wheat, corn, and tobacco, tied with a bow below. The compact format of the gold dollar often challenged the Mint’s engravers and coining staff, making well-struck and attractive examples especially desirable.
Certified NGC MS63, this piece shows the sharp, frosty-to-satiny luster expected of a Choice Mint State survivor. The surfaces retain an appealing warm golden color, with generally solid definition through Liberty’s portrait and the reverse wreath. As is typical for the grade, light marks and faint hairlines are visible in the fields, but the overall presentation remains attractive and fully consistent with the assigned designation. The eye appeal is enhanced by the even color and the pleasing balance between strike, luster, and preservation.
The Type 3 Gold Dollar enjoys enduring popularity among collectors of 19th-century United States gold, both as a one-per-type representative and as part of complete date runs. Issued during the Reconstruction era, the 1869-dated coinage belongs to a fascinating post–Civil War period in American numismatics, when gold denominations continued to circulate in commerce while increasingly becoming objects of careful saving. Gold dollars, with their diminutive size and distinctive design, remain among the most popular entry points into the classic U.S. gold series.
Within the date run, the 1869 is a collectible Philadelphia issue that is encountered with some regularity in lower circulated grades, but attractive Mint State examples are notably more elusive. NGC reports a population of just 13 pieces in MS63, with none finer listed in the population data provided here, a level of certified scarcity that heightens its appeal for registry-minded buyers and advanced type collectors alike. In this preservation tier, the coin occupies an especially desirable niche: high enough in grade to offer strong eye appeal, yet still accessible relative to the finest known examples.
A handsome and certified 1869 Gold Dollar, this Choice Mint State example offers an appealing combination of historical charm, solid technical quality, and limited certified availability.
